3/19-20 charlotte and Savannah

Every mile a memory by dierks Bentley
Oh, every mile, a memory, every song, another scene
From some old movie going back in time, you and me
Every day, a page turned back in time, you and me
Like a freight train rollin’ through my dreams
Every mile a memory

Making more new memories-doing and seeing new thing.  We've got the time, right?!😁

Sunday we stopped in Charlotte, NC. My friend Sheryl and her husband Ed moved there when she retired 3 years ago. (same time as me) Three years is a long time to miss someone you shared kids and a classroom with for so many years. Sheryl was (is) one of the best! Loved seeing their beautiful home and city. They are great hosts and showed us a bit of the history of Charlotte. They took us on the Liberty Walk. Its a self paced walk that teaches and shows you some of the history of Charlotte and it's role in the American Revolution. If you go to Charlotte, look for this on your phone.  complete with map and information. Why doesn't every city have this?? Check it out.

Sheryl and me in front of queen Charlotte's statue. So much 4th grade history here! Did you king George almost didn't marry her because she had a small mouth. 😂

After the walk we stopped at a local brewery for some local beer, then headed back to Sheryl and Ed's for a great dinner and some local wine. We definitely slept well that night! Sheryl could open a B&B! She's a great hostess who has thought of everything to make her guests comfortable! Can't thank you enough! And Rusty was a great little dog! We enjoyed him.

Monday we traveled to Savannah Georgia. Cue Ray Charles! We stayed in the historic downtown area. More 4th grade history! We took a mile walk along the river that includes placards with bits of history. They could learn something from Charlotte about getting a phone app! Then we walked another mile along Bull St where there are monuments and squares every block or so. Occasional remnants of the St Patty’s day parade could be seen along the way.  Apparently savannah has the 2nd largest St Patrick's day parade in the world. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad think that we missed it 😝 they boasted how this year they put a lot of effort into cleaning up after the big event.

Lots of great things to see. There’s a few blocks of an open air market full of shops, stands, music and people. There’s a big student population here. Hence all the beer cups scattered everywhere. Pretty churches and historic buildings. We laughed every time we saw the word historic. Everything was historic.
Look here’s some historic steps! I guess the historic status allows it to not meet any safety codes! If you go we would recommend Garibaldi’s for dinner. We did the river walk after breakfast before heading off to Florida. Didn’t get any running in yet but in both hotels I did multiple stair repeats as my workout. If you can get past the vertigo, it’s a great workout! Amazing how that can get your heart pounding! See you in the sunshine!☀☀☀

3/18

On the road again
Just can’t wait to get back on the road again
Going places I’ve never been
Seein’ things that I may never see again
And I can’t wait to get back on the road again

Definitely going places we've never been and seeing things we've never seen!

Drove just about 500 miles. No rush right? We've got time! We drove out of the snow pretty quickly but had cloudy, misty weather most of the day. We were able to take the winter coats off and walk around in sweaters though. Now that's new!! We decided to stop in Front Royal, VA to see some sites. We visited the skyline caverns. Then walked around the town to see some of the historic civil war sites. Plan for tomorrow is to drive through the Shenandoah National Park and stop along the way.

Road trip!
Miles to go before I sleep!
Movies always make cross country road trips look like an exciting adventure-full of group sing-alongs, I spy games, fun stop at cool sites like “the big ball of twine” and “the world’s biggest fry pan”.  Other than a college cross country trip to California with my buddy Cola, most of my road trips have simply been a way to get there.  Not a lot of adventure. We tick off the time, by juggling CD’s, rationing snacks, and focusing on how many hours until the next meal stop. Occasionally we have tried a book on tape but that hasn’t always worked out for us. I fall asleep or get distracted and then want to rewind. No fun for Lou. Luckily I have a husband who needs lots of bathroom stops so there are frequent opportunities to stretch. While there is definitely more space in the car than in an airplane seat, the space gets exponentially smaller as the hours pass. Luckily I have no problem reading in the car so finding that book that will keep me riveted helps. On the plus side, I don’t have to worry about luggage! I can bring all the shoes that fit in the car!!!🚗😍❤
So that leaves me wondering what to blog about while we drive. For some reason, I don’t think anyone will read us if I report: 8:00-finished the grapes, looking forward to the almonds at 9:00. Thinking, thinking of a topic that will keep me busy, (let’s be honest, it is the main reason why I do this) and that maybe a few people might read. Hmm…I’ll give it some thought. As always, I will post pics so if you want to skip the text and look at the pic, how would I know?
Hopefully I’ll come up with something entertaining.  See you on the road!!
